Fall Into Wellness: Why Your Spine Needs Extra Care This Season

The leaves are starting to turn here in Vermont, and you know what that means—time to think about how our bodies handle the shift into cooler weather. Your spine, in particular, needs some extra attention this time of year.

What Fall Does to Your Back

Here's something most people don't realize: seasonal changes actually affect your spine. When temperatures drop, your muscles naturally tighten up. We're spending less time in the sun, which messes with our mood and posture. Plus, we're doing different activities—raking those endless piles of leaves, hauling firewood, getting the house ready for winter.

We see it every year at our clinics. Patients walk in wondering why their back suddenly feels stiff again, or why that nagging ache decided to make a comeback right around this time.

Think of Your Spine Like Vermont's Trees

Just like the maples and oaks around us need the right conditions to make it through winter strong, your spine needs some preparation too.

Keep moving, even when it's chilly – When it gets cold, we naturally want to curl up inside. But your spine needs movement to stay healthy. Find ways to keep active indoors, dress in layers so your muscles stay warm, and don't let the shorter days turn you into a couch potato.

Be smart about fall chores – Raking leaves? Bend those knees, not your back. Carrying pumpkins and apple cider? Split the weight between both arms. Decorating for the holidays? Take breaks and don't try to do everything in one weekend.

Set up your indoor spaces right – We're about to spend a lot more time inside. Make sure your workspace supports good posture. Get some decent lighting so you're not hunching over. Create spaces where you can relax without slouching.

It's About More Than Just Pain

Look, we're not just trying to keep your back from hurting—though that's important too. When your spine is aligned and your nervous system is working properly, everything else works better. You'll have more energy for apple picking with the kids. You'll sleep better during those long October nights. You'll feel more resilient when the winter blues try to creep in.

What You Can Do Right Now

Schedule a seasonal tune-up with us. Don't wait until something hurts—let's get ahead of it.

Pay attention to what your body's telling you. New aches and stiffness aren't just "getting older."

Use this season of change as a reminder to recommit to taking care of yourself.

Dr. Charles always tells patients, "Your body knows how to heal itself when you give it what it needs." This fall, let's make sure you're giving it exactly that.
